Research - Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The umbrellas of Cherbourg, is a musical set in France following two young lovers. The musical is sung throughout, even during simple conversation. I have seen this performed at the curve in Leicester in 2011, and it was just fantastic from beginning to end. There was a strong use of the ensemble, such as them setting up the stage with props etc, to them becoming chairs and tables for the rest of the cast to having their own musical numbers. I think for our piece we can maybe take some influences from this, because there was a strong element of playing with theatricality as well as the fact that it was a play within a play, which is what we want to achieve with our piece.

Additionally I think we can take influences from their set also, although our budget little to none! I really like that way in which it looks so "french", through the use of fonts of the garage sign. I also like the use of colour, which I think we could use also throughout the set of our cafe, to make it look quirky.
