Week 7 - Week commencing 3rd November - Feedback from Jo

So we had a catch up with Jo today, we showed her where we are up to in regards to what we have devised and she gave us many things to consider! including :-

  • Set of emotions - We need to aware of what emotions we want to convey and how the audience empathise with certain characters.
  • Need to make informed decisions about what our piece is about, and what message we want to convey to the audience overall. As well as more importantly what informed decisions we want to make in terms of the creation of this piece.
  • Conventions and transitions - The transitions in this piece really need looking at currently, as when we have devised scenes, we have not considered how they will transition into the next scene or moment in the piece. Additionally because this a unnaturalistic piece, their needs to be a good use of conventions used in order to make it entertaining to watch and to make it flow as well as creating a interesting piece to look at.
  • In regards to the audience we need to think about where we are performing to in terms of proxemics and staging, as the audience are essentially spectators in this piece.
  • Puppetry - This is something as a group we need to consider sooner rather than later, as the puppets in some ways is one of the most important scenes in the piece due to the fact that it must be well rehearsed otherwise it will not work.
  • Sally's character overall could be more heightened to be paired with Beth and I, and to add to the theatricality of the piece.
  • Projection, which is pretty self explanatory, we need to all project more in rehearsals to make sure that we 100% on top form for when we get into the space and perform.
  • In the contrasting couples scene, before we sit down as each couple, Jo noted what there maybe needs to be this aspect of Beth and I looking at each other before we sit or us both sitting down at the same time to show that we are changing into our characters, also this will reflect well in regards to out intention to create this idea of heightened physicality.
  • In Mildred and Barry, we need to make sure the remark about Aunt Aggie is clear as to what we are walking about. It may mean that we take this out, as it may be too confusing for the audience.
  • With Sally being the control in this piece, Jo noted that perhaps we include this aspect of Sally formulating character, in that she helps us to find our character as we morph into character in scenes such as the chavvy lads, and perhaps even Mildred and Barry.
  • Finally, we need to constantly remember what our aims are for this piece when devising, referring back to our proposal as much as we can.

I feel as though everything Jo has said is constructive and feel as though we can make more progress from what she has said.
